1Jarhead (2005)
Directed By: Sam Mendes

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Scott MacDonald

Genre: Animation – Family – Comedy

Runtime: 2 hours 4 minutes

Studio: Universal Studios

Watch Trailer

Jarhead is a film about the conflict in Saudi Arabia. It foccuses more on the marines that are in the war then the war itself. This movie has little or no fight in it, if you were looking for a lot of blood, this might not be for you personally. If you’d prefer a great story about the subject of war and our brave members of the military, then definitely watch it. The performing was outstanding all around. Jake Gyllenhaal has a hard part, creating a marine who has been trained to kill, and is prohibited to complete his job. Suggest if you are a Marine trying to explain what a life of a Marine is, just pop this film in and watch it.

2Rules of Engagement (2000)

Genre: Action – Drama – Thriller

Watch Trailer

This movie deals primarily with a thirty year veteran of the Marine Corps. who’s put on test for the accused ordering of civilians in Yemen. This movie starts with a couple of battle moments which were well done and then drifts right into a couple of court room moments which are intriguing. If you are a action buff then this film won’t satisfy you- the courtroom moments require intelligence to understand, consequently requiring lots of patience to sit through them thought they’re very well done. Sam Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones are generally superb and they are here too. Strongly recommended.

3Dogfight (1991)
Directed By: Nancy Savoca

Genre: Drama – Romance – War

Runtime: 1 hour 34 minutes

Studio: Warner Bros.

Watch Trailer

The storyline is all about the 2 key characters, Eddie and his date Rose, on the last night just before he and his friends ship out to Viet Nam. From begin to end this film pulls you in and makes you feel for Rose and Eddie. The sweetness of their love unfolds so realistically and so well that you simply forget you are watching a movie. The story by itself is pretty simple, but the execution of the storyline is what makes Dogfight a very wonderful movie.

This is a superbly written and directed romance. Compelling, without suffering from the corniness typical of movies in this genre. I recommend this. It will stay with you for longer than you think of.

4The Boys in Company C (1978)
Directed By: Sidney J. Furie

Starring: Rick Natkin, Sidney J. Furie

Genre: Drama – War

Runtime: 125 minutes

Studio: Henstooth Video

Watch Trailer

An excellent movie for its time. The ‘Boys in Company C’is a classic and underrated. This film is a character study of a ficticious platoon in the US Military who’re sent on numerous missions dealing with the effects of war. The guys travel from bootcamp to the fields of Cambodia to play soccer and fight in a dreadful war. This film accurately depicts the problems that face all men in grave situations, with and without close friends at their sides.

5Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)

Directed By: Allan Dwan

Starring: John Wayne, John Agar

Genre: Drama – War

Runtime: 100 minutes

Studio: Republic Pictures

Watch Trailer

This movie works very nicely to tell an essential war story without having violence, and some touching love relationships without lewdness. The movie starts with the U. S. Marines regrouping in New Zealand following the battle for Guadalcanal had ended. Sergeant Stryker is assigned to command a platoon of Marine corps who’re nervous to see some action. John Wayne is murdered in the very last scene by a sniper when he is just about to light a cigarette – and smoking did kill him in real life.

6Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
Directed By: Oliver Stone

Starring: Tom Cruise, Raymond J. Barry

Genre: Drama – War

Runtime: 2 hours 25 minutes

Studio: Universal Studios

Watch Trailer

The primary hero, Ron Kovic, is suffering from the terrors of war which he saw on the battlefield in Vietnam. Ron comes to Vietnam motivated by dreams of serving his beloved homeland and gets home crippled and half-crazy. Tom Cruise does a great work in creating the character and moody disposition of this wheelchair victim.

This film, however, isn’t for the younger children nor for the weak of heart, but for older family members.

7The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Directed By: David Lean

Starring: William Holden, Jack Hawkins

Genre: Drama – War

Runtime: 2 hours 43 minutes

Studio: Sony Pictures

Watch Trailer

“Bridge Over the River Kwai” is an Oscar winning World War II movie, loosely based on a book by French author Pierre Boulle. Yet, Hollywood had to modify the storyline to make it more palatable to American audiences by introducing an United states star into the cast. The story basically involves British POW’s having to build a bridge deep in the jungle of Burma.

The emotional aspect of the movie is amazing. Saito’s personal sense of honor doesn’t allow him to use the violence necessary to coerce the prisoners into constructing the bridge correctly. Ironically, once he succumbs to defeat in the battle of wills against Nicholson, he gets almost everything he wants. By losing, he actually wins. This really is potentially the best war movie ever made. What more can one say?

8A Few Good Men (1992)
Directed By: Rob Reiner

Starring: Wolfgang Bodison, Tom Cruise

Genre: Crime – Drama

Runtime: 2 hours 19 minutes

Studio: Columbia Pictures

Watch Trailer

One of the more popular movie lines ever and it comes from an excellent movie. It’s a court docket drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. For a basic story summary, 2 marine corps, Downey and Dawson, are accused of murdering private Santiago during a disciplinary process known unofficially as a Code Red. Once again Tom Cruise provides another Oscar worthy overall performance about a Navy Officer Attorney defending 2 Marines accused of eliminating a fellow recruit because of his shortcomings unworthy of being a Marine.

If you’re thinking about seeing a well made, film courtroom drama, that’s both thought provoking and enjoyable then I recommend “A Few Good Men”.

9Heartbreak Ridge (1986)
Directed By: Clint Eastwood

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Marsha Mason

Genre: Action – Drama

Runtime: 2 hours 10 minutes

Studio: Warner Bros.

Watch Trailer

Heartbreak Ridge is really a classic film whose primary role is head up by Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood stars, directs and produces this very good storyline of a hardened Marine who takes charge of a group of misfit recruits. He’s to show these guys how to be marine corps, while simultaneously fighting against his superior officers.

Army life, for many individuals who go in and serve 2 or 4 years, experience this as an indelible period in their life that effects them ever after.

In short, Heartbreak Ridge is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection if you haven’t done so already.

10Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Directed By: Stanley Kubrick

Starring: Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin

Genre: Drama – War

Runtime: 1 hour 57 minutes

Studio: Warner Bros.

Watch Trailer

The movie is split into 2 distinct parts, basic Marine training, and ‘combat” in Vietnam, with the 1st taking part during marine recruit training where the would-be military are molded into remorseless eliminating machines. The 2nd half follows Private Joker to Vietnam and the battle of Hue City.

The performing here’s amazing and very powerful, particularly in the starting section of the movie. The 2 main performances come from R. Lee Ermey, as the sadistic drill instructor, and Vincent D’Onofrio as Pyle.

General, this is a serious and interesting film that superbly describes army experiences on and off the battlefield. I suggest this movie to anyone interested in discovering what Marine Corps boot camp was really like back in the “Old Corps”.
